ELSEWHERE, NOT HERE

Photography has always been, for me, a way of keeping what inevitably passes — Nostalgia and I have always walked hand in hand.

Over the years I have crossed cities, countries, languages and landscapes. I have lived in, and had the privilege of visiting, places that were not mine and that, for a brief moment, became home all the same.

I carried with me the condition and the gaze of a foreigner — observing, learning, belonging only in part.

Elsewhere, Not Here gathers fragments of those crossings and of the lives lived inside them.

But where exactly is “here”?

Brazilian by origin, living today in a third country that is not mine either, I have learned that belonging can be a passing state. That we sometimes inhabit memories more than addresses. That memory draws geographies of its own.

Each photograph in this series is a trace of presence. An instant held by the gaze of a foreigner, in that place, on that day — a day my memory might well have failed me on, had this record not existed.

These are not portraits of destinations, but of experience. Of brief encounters, of strangeness, of discovery and of unexpected familiarity.
